A noindex setting asks search engines to leave a page out of their results. On your homepage, that keeps you out of Google, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, and other AI search tools tend to respect the same signal.
It’s often left on by accident after a site launches, because it’s common to switch it on while a new site is being built.
Where to switch it off
- WordPress: Settings › Reading. Untick Discourage search engines from indexing this site. Then check your SEO plugin’s settings for the homepage.
- Shopify: check for apps or theme code adding a robots meta tag, and that the store isn’t password-protected.
- Other platforms: look for “hide from search engines” or “search engine visibility” in your settings.
If none of these apply, the setting may be in a response header (X-Robots-Tag) added by your host or CDN: ask your developer.
For your developer
Remove noindex/none from <meta name="robots"> and any X-Robots-Tag response header on public pages. Check staging-only settings did not ship to production.
General guidance only. Take a backup before making changes, and test on a staging copy where you can. Nobody can guarantee what AI tools recommend.
